This Native American Heritage Month I want to spread awareness for MMIWG2S crisis, the crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirits.

This post has facts, resources to learn more, and includes links with ways to help, although I hope as you read more you realize how much spreading awareness could leave a huge impact as it would create even more help, protections, and resources.

Did you know that indigenous women, girls, and two spirits are murdered and go missing at such high rates that both the USA and Canada have declared it a crisis and epidemic?

In some places they are murdered, assaulted, and go missing at 10x the national average?

The statistics that prove it in the USA:

And Canada:

May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for MMIWG2S in the USA. In Canada it falls on the same day and it’s referred to as Red Dress Day.

Red is a sacred color to indigenous peoples. As such is the color we use to raise awareness for our women, girls, and two spirits that have come under harm.

We use both red dresses and a red handprint over the mouth to raise awareness. So if you see these symbols please pay them their proper respect. They are not to be used in cosplay or costumes nor are they to be mocked or appropriated.

You’ll also find the phrase “No more stolen sisters” in discussions about MMIW. This is a phrase specifically intended to raise awareness and bring attention to the MMIWG2S crisis and it shouldn’t be applied to anyone except indigenous women, girls, and two spirits.

Along with all these facts I wanna ask you to look up infamous cases of MMIW. Look up Savanna Greywind and look up “Search the Landfill.” And please check out this link that covers the legal “loophole” that allows tribal women to be assaulted without any hope for their non-native abusers being held accountable.

Let the horror that some native and first nations women go through fuel your desire to become an advocate for the MMIWG2S epidemic. Sit with us in solidarity and acknowledge the scope of the systemic injustices being done against us.

More reources on MMIWG2S, how the crisis is being handled by government, and how you can help:

List of resources from the Coalition to Stop Violence Against Natives Women that includes resources for women, LGBT and two spirit people, trafficking survivors, DV survivors, and of course resources specific to MMIWG2S.

If you have any questions please ask them, just be respectful and don’t ask anything in bad faith.

Occasionally as an Australian you’ll be talking to someone from overseas, and you’ll discover a common phrase you took for granted is, in fact, not universally known outside of our country.

Turns out casually dropping “fuck me dead” into conversation will give unsuspecting Americans an aneurism.

The more you know.

image

Imagine being on a work call with an Aussie and they suddenly announce they’re gonna blow a load in response to a problem.

Not Aussie but I asked an American once if she was taking the piss ( i.e. pulling my leg, joking. Perfectly cromulent and friendly english expression)

and she got really upset because she thought I was threatening to piss ON her

This is killing me

Rifling through the tags, here’s some other terms which are apparently causing mass carnage whenever they escape our borders:

  • Having a goon (i.e. Sipping on a delightful wine)
  • Having a gaytime (Eating an icecream)
  • Having a sticky beak (Investigating)
  • Take a squiz (To have a sticky beak)
  • Get stuffed (To express a revelation is most frightful)
  • Chuck a sickie (Take a day off work due to the humours being misaligned)
  • Chuck a wobbly (When one’s temperament becomes visibly upset)
  • Carry on like a pork chop (Acting most silly indeed)
  • Thongs (flip flops)
  • Hot chook (Pre-cooked supermarket rotisserie chicken, otherwise known as the Bachelor’s Handbag)
  • Fair suck of the sauce bottle (Let’s be real)
  • Shits me to tears (Something is mildly annoying)
  • Not here to fuck spiders (Expressing a situation is serious)
  • Having a piss-up (A social gathering)
  • I’ll shout you (offering to goon an old chum)
  • A cruisy place (a relaxed atmosphere, where one might shout and goon the night away while enjoying many a gaytime in your favourite thongs)

So I realize Mal is British not Australian but I could hear him saying this.

Mal: Listen. I’m not here to f—- spiders.

Everyone: 😳

Serin: Well, thank you for clearing that up. I was worried for a minute.

I cannot believe there’s absolutely no way to watch free shows and movies anymore, there are too many paid streaming platforms and pirating websites have viruses and ads preventing you from watching it uninterrupted((.)) id rather follow the rules and purchase media moving forward because it is too inconvenient. Seriously, free and no ads or viruses with 1080p streaming is DEAD.

Exactly! It’s freaking annoying when I want to watch movies but I would have to subscribe to like 24 different services . Just to watch the shows that I like.

Oh and wouldn’t it be nice for cartoons? Just anything animated. I just wanna stream things without getting conned. Must I be cartoonless forever?

i like using streaming apps but there are waaaay too many and they’re all stealing my data .i wish there was a secure and organized way to have millions of shows and movies available one one app. but alas. we’ve truly gone full circle back to cable + now it spies on you. its a real shame. i dont want to fill my device storage with tons of boring and stupid cash grabs.

the persecution of lefthandedness is insane to think about because it was so intense for so long, in some places still is, without any clear profit motivation. sheer love of the game. as late as the 70s at least they were smacking my stepdad’s hands for it with a wooden ruler at school, to this day he’s in weird ambidexterity situation where he’s not great with either side and notably clumsy due to poor hand-eye coordination. just wtf

It is fascinating to me that people also think of handedness as an example of bigotry that just…went away. As you note, it…hasn’t in some places. I know people who grew up in the mid-late 90s who still had this problem.

But also, and this is really important to keep in mind regarding bigotry that still causes in many ways larger problems, that the structural problems are not actually fixed.

If you go to any computer lab or public library, the mice will be on the right side of the computer. Sometimes they can be moved. Sometimes they can’t. Many computer mice are curved to only fit in right hands.

It is impossible to find lefthanded scissors without going to a specialty store, because most scissor makers don’t even make them. And it’s not just a matter of grip; the slicing side of the blades is obscured if you use righty scissors in your left hand, so your cut is off.

All those signing pads with the little chained styluses? Almost always on the right side, often not even long enough to stretch to the left. Makes signing for lefties extremely difficult.

I caused actual muscular problems in college having to twist around in order to write at right-handed desks in college when there weren’t enough lefty desks–and there never were. Some classrooms didn’t even have a single one.

I could go on.

But the point is, bigotry isn’t just a mindset shift. People can’t just decide they’re not bothered by that particular difference anymore and everything’s fine, because society is still structured and designed to cause problems for marginalized people. And they’re never even going to notice all the little ways their life is bent to convenience them that inconveniences others.

There’s this whole story unfolding on TikTok right now about this account that got popular — a woman in the US who calls up churches & pretends to have a starving newborn that hasn’t eaten since last evening & asks them if they could help her out with a can of formula. Unsurprisingly, none of the ridiculous megachurches actually ever say yes, and the churches & other religious institutions that did say yes are getting lots of support from people.

But I just saw a video of a TT user explaining that they decided to do their own little social experiment — by walking up to drug dealers on the street, telling them there’s a young woman with a baby who needs help with formula, and literally all of them immediately reached into their pockets. In this story, the OP did have a real neighbor with a baby who ended up getting some much needed baby supplies. Thanks to the charity of local drug dealers.

A lot of Americans are learning that their rich white Christian churches are less willing to help their communities than black churches, mosques, buddhist temples, the satanic temple & apparently also crack dealers.

“That’s why it’s hard to make friends when you’re older,” she said. “Friendship is rude.”

Her friend’s eyes widened. “What?”

“Think about it! When we’re kids we decide who we like and stick by them no matter what. As adults, we’re taught to be polite.

But, friendship is an imposition— at least, I want it to be. Call me after nine o’clock. Don’t think you’ll ever wear out your welcome. Overshare, show up at my door, go to the grocery store with me so we can waste another hour chatting.

We’ll never be friends if we spend all of our energy trying not to bother each other.”

With the holidays here, thought this is worth sharing

This website is still here and some of the asks are heartbreaking. Like “Jamie wants a new pair of jeans because he’s never had new clothes before”. Or “Kayla wants a bag with her name on it for when she moves foster homes again.”

A lot of these kids ask for brand name clothing and it sounds pretentious but having one nice new fashionable piece of clothing means a lot when all your previous clothes have come out of black trash bags from charities.

Btw, you can filter wishes based on gender, age, price, etc to help you find the perfect wish for you. This charity is LGBTQ-affirming (unlike a lot of religion-based charities that are unfortunately homophobic), so you can even look for nonbinary kids to donate to.

Also, I would really encourage people to be open to granting wishes made by older foster kids (14+) or young adults who aged out of the system and still lack family support. They’re so often forgotten.

If you don’t have a lot of money but still want to help give a kid a nice Christmas, there are lots of wishes that are $24 for stocking stuffers as well, or $15 for a sqishmallow!

https://www.onesimplewish.org

I just want to add that right now, there are so many pending wishes for food. Kids are asking for food from the universe (and yeah, “kids” includes young adults just entering the work force–eighteen and hungry is just as morally wrong as eight and hungry).

Image description: a tweet by divinelydaria.

saw an inspiring video that said you need to have 4 hobbies.

create, consume, cavort, commune

create: bring something to life
consume: appreciate the art of another
cavort: move your body daily
commune: have a community to socialize with

end image description.

I think you need hobbies that do all four things but the number of hobbies needed to cover all these needs may vary. Some hobbies pull double/triple duty. Some hobbies can cause repetitive stress injuries so it’s good to have a few different ones that fulfill the same need so you can rotate to get the fulfillment without the carpal tunnel.

Tumblr really is aging.

This is true tho.

Misread this as ‘you need to have 4 hobbits’

also true! there’s a really famous three-volume self-help guide about that!

unless all you’re doing is liberating a single mountain from a dragon, in which case you can probably get by with just one, so long as you also have a lot of dwarves.

Literally less than a year ago we were adding cool spins to it like “Sliding Up Tokyo Tower” how did we downgrade so hard?

We even got live action slide

The slide in the first post bothers the fuck out of me because he’s using his right leg to slide on the ground.

So, I ride a motorcycle and I know at least the theory of doing a power slide (still cool but you don’t slide nearly so much and you need a pretty light bike to do it most of the time). You have to lock the back wheel until your back wheel looses grip on the road and then turn sharply to the left. Rear wheel slides and the front wheel turns.

But how do you lock the back wheel you might ask? Well with your rear break of course.

WHICH IS UNIVERSALLY UNDER YOUR RIGHT FOOT! How the FUCK is he locking the back wheel, with his shifter on his left foot??? Not possible. The creators of Akira knew it, and so did everyone that homaged it. The post above gets it right even if he’s likely on a slider and being pulled back.

This is why I love tumblr. Where else could I find gifs of back to back tribute references and a perfect explanation of why the above doesn’t work and how you would need to do everything to ideally execute to move in question? Thank you for explaining, fellow tumblr friend.
